Children's Book Author/Illustrator, Creating Books that Sprout and Take Root
Creative thinking is a thread woven through my life. As a child, I was fascinated by nature—
from frogs in the basement window to crayfish in a local stream and butterflies. The last of five children, my life was simple—school in fall, pool in summer. Underwater, I’d swim like a mermaid and imagine tropical fish and dolphins by my side. My parents allowed me a lot of freedom to explore, which sparked my imagination and ideas that I’d draw.
From summer art classes at a local farm and the MFA in Boston, to live portrait classes at our library and drawing classes at the Art Student League in New York — art was and is an important connection in my life.
As a teen tour guide at the Masachusetts State House and an intern at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, sharing my love of history and art is woven into my being. Frequent visits to the MET, MOMA, Frick and 57th street galleries filled my creative well, as a young adult.
With an Art History major and Studio Art minor, I became a graphic artist. It enabled me to love my career. Copy was integral to design, so I often wrote or choose words that were the essence of the visual concept.
My first job required me to create many children’s designs, inspiring me a to take a children’s book class at the Museum School in Boston. I promised myself when the timing was right, I’d return to my dream of being an author/illustrator. After thirty plus years working as a graphic artist, the time was right to fulfill my dream of creating children's books. I’m a member of SCBWI, The Writer’s Loft, Panera6 (a local CB critique group) and read the The Horn Book faithfully. I continue to weave my creative thinking by writing and illustrating children’s book stories—making stories that will stay with kids for a lifetime. Unique stories with imagination, emotion and substance, that entertain and educate, while layered with nature and optimism.
